How to eat well on a budget in Prague
Visitors often tell me that eating out in Prague is expensive. When we compare where and what we ate, it sometimes turns out that we paid very different amounts for a similar meal. Here are a few tips to help you eat well on a more comfortable budget.
Step away from the busiest streets
Try a less crowded street, where prices may be more reasonable. If your plans allow, explore neighbourhoods beyond Prague 1, such as Vinohrady, Žižkov, Karlín, Holešovice or Smíchov. These are a short journey from the historic centre, and some areas are within walking distance.
Check the menu before sitting down
Before sitting down, look at the menu, including drinks and extras. Prices vary between restaurants and seasons, so compare current menus and read recent reviews.
Look for Czech dishes and a daily lunch menu
For a meal that offers good value, try traditional dishes such as beef in cream sauce, goulash or fried cheese. A daily lunch menu may cost less than the regular menu.
Look for the words polední menu or denní menu. Check which days and hours the lunch menu is served and what it costs. Arriving early can help you avoid missing the most popular dishes.
Two personal recommendations in the centre are Mincovna and Lokál. Check their current menus and prices before visiting.

These recommendations are not for kosher restaurants. If you need kosher food or have other dietary requirements, check directly with the restaurant before visiting.
